Bodycount
Let me just say right from the start, I love Bodycount. Bodycount is a first-person-shooter that is a fun game to play. So let me do the newer, cooler style of posts of our reviews.
The Excellent Things: Bodycount asks itself the question "How do I appeal to players who conquer WW III daily?" The answer: Destructibility. Bodycount allows players to shred the surroundings with guns. Not windows and little stuff (of course you can destroy those). But sometimes even full blown walls! Also, the sounds for Bodycount are just amazing. Another thing is the co-op mode. This mode puts players in an area and makes them survive against waves of enemies. It gets hard by having more enemies show up at each wave but, there is an even harder thing. As the waves go on, the cover you once had becomes destroyed. This make avoiding bullets harder. Bodycount also drops you into a open map and allows you to take whatever direction you want.
The Average Things: The story. I was about to put it under bad but about 3/4 of the way through you get hit with a plot twist that I was not expecting. The graphics; enough said.
The Bad Things: Bodycount has had some bugs that I have discovered. Also, The online lobbies are atrocious. To start you need EVERYONE in the lobby to ready up meaning you get some jerks who don't ready up to make everyone mad.
Altogether, I like Bodycount and really recommend it to anyone who like blowing crap up.
Comments
We picked up Bodycount at Game Stop a couple of days after it was released. We pre-ordered ours because Firewall200 has been anticipating this game for months. I was surprised to find that Game Stop hadn't even stocked their shelves with the title. The associate was excited that we bought it, as he thought that no one was aware of the game.
At the time I thought it was odd that the associate described the game as "arcadey". His thinking was the game-play was a throw-back to old-school arcade shooters. And there certainly is plenty of action...they don't call it Bodycount for nothing.
The story line is a bit lame, and it's hard to get immersed in it. But the action is fast paced and fun. Forget the story, play this one for the shooting.
Graphics and imagery are fine, but the enemies are crudely rendered. I found it hard to spot enemies against some of the darker locations. The "Target" are particularly difficult to see as they are little more than shadows from a distance.
The scoring system is a little strange, and I don't like receiving a letter grade at each level; makes me feel like I'm going to school. Or maybe being schooled. The save system is fine (a frequent pet-peeve of mine) and the missions are sized appropriately.
The highlight of the game are the destructive environments. It's fun to blast away at walls and objects; I find myself using my guns to make a shortcut, or to blast a hole that I can shoot from. I'm a shoot from cover type of player, so Bodycount is forcing me to shift my style to more of a run and shoot. In any case, it's adrenalin packed fun.
